The majority of 1872 dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, with a small percentage of that year's total coming from the Carson City and San Francisco Mints. 1872 Liberty Seated dollars are the most common of the Liberty Seated dollar series in terms of mintage, and they are therefore usually bought by coin collectors who want relatively inexpensive examples of these coins for inclusion in their type sets I have only recently got into the U.S Trade dollar, I have been a Morgan dollar collector mostly, the U.S trade dollar was only minted from 1873-1885 so unfortunately your example is not genuine, there are other tell tale signs but it is not necessary to look further as there is no 1872 U.S trade dollar .The new silver coins carried different specifications and were struck primarily for the purpose of export trade with Asia. Many surviving examples attest to this as they were counter stamped with Oriental characters or chop marks The above image is an example of an 1872 Trade Dollar, and I could point out many features that make this coin fake, but the bottom line is that NO Trade Dollars where produced in 1872! If you don't know this fact already than please look over our website, for this info, or buy an authoritative coin book

The 1872-S silver dollar is one of just three issues for this type struck at the San Francisco Mint and the only one reasonably obtainable by collectors for the subtype with motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
